Associated Press: potential issues

By Charlie Quane and Kevin Le | 11/1/23

In the age of information, presenting data in a factual manner is not only good hygiene but also prevents spreading of misinformation. The AP Stylebooks says, “ Data for stories and visual presentations must be vetted for integrity and validity”, which brings up our main concern: where did this information come from? It is the responsibility of journalism to protect the public against a manipulated narrative.

Another concern is the editing of photos and videos.  Images and videos must always be accurate.  This prevents misinformation and forms of defamation from occurring.  The AP Stylebook states that images and videos for stories must be accurate and cannot be altered or digitally manipulated. Minor adjustments can be made to make the photo or video a clear and authentic version of the original.
