Making A Case

By: Charlie Quane, Nico Shorack, and Kevin Le | 11/6/23

Real Change News is focused primarily on informing the public on issues related to marginalized individuals while providing a platform to instill shifts in social perspectives. They do this by taking a stance, advocating, and applying the steps Rheingold details in his “Making A Case For Your Position” point.

The reading states, “When you speak in a public voice—as a citizen appealing to other citizens as part of the serious business of self-governance—you are undertaking the co-creation of democracy.” Here, we see Real Change taking steps to speak in a public voice by using their paper to get their opinion and lens out into the public sphere. They use this to appeal to other citizens in the area, those who live in Seattle and attempt to “self-govern” by calling attention to the Housing and Homeless Crisis. It is this calling to attention by careful framing of articles around the issue that ultimately helps to make their case for a position of “change” and thus lends itself to Rheingold’s second theme of exercising public voice instead of a more analytic style.
