Real Change or Real Fraud?
By Charlie Quane, Kevin Le, and Nico Shorack | November 11, 2023
In one article, Real Change accessed public records on a story about the former King County Regional Homelessness Authority CEO, Marc Dones, who resigned and then got a contract for $60,000 USD. The paper accessed the information from Marc Dones's contract with the City of Seattle using public access.
Understanding where state and federal funds are allocated is essential for ensuring funds are fairly distributed. This public record is vital because it shows a potential government employee signing on for 6 months to create Medicaid housing. This is important to Real Change because it directly affects their readership, and the article alludes that Marc Dones was on his way out anyway. So, why did he get the contract? This kind of question wouldn’t be possible without public records.
